Wireless CarPlay on Windows: Requirements and Setup

Updated November 5, 20265 min read

TL;DR: Put the PC and iPhone on the same LAN, enable Bluetooth on both, and keep iPhone Wi-Fi on. Open Wireless CarPlay in AirMirroring, save the iPhone's Wi-Fi name/password, pair from iPhone Bluetooth settings using the displayed PC name, then select the phone in the app and click Enter CarPlay. Pairing does not launch CarPlay automatically.

Check These Requirements First

Start from AirMirroring's Windows product page and use its Microsoft Store link. Check the listing against your PC rather than assuming another receiver's requirements apply.

The documented build uses x64 dependencies; ARM64 and emulation support have not been established. A verified minimum iOS version is not specified here. Build scope: This flow follows current build guidance and device reports; the Store release may differ, so check your installed version's options.

RequirementWhat to verify
PC BluetoothWindows recognizes the adapter and Bluetooth is enabled
iPhone radiosBluetooth and Wi-Fi are enabled
Local networkPC and iPhone are on the same LAN
Wi-Fi credentialsYou know the actual network name/password used by the iPhone
Phone settingsSiri is enabled and Screen Time allows CarPlay

The PC can use Ethernet to the same router instead of Wi-Fi, but still needs Bluetooth. AirMirroring does not create a hotspot or change Windows network settings. Do not assume any arbitrary phone or PC hotspot will work.

Set Up Wireless CarPlay

Keep the iPhone nearby and unlocked so you can respond to prompts. Use one phone for the first attempt to avoid selecting a saved device you did not intend to connect.

1. Save the Wi-Fi Details in AirMirroring

Open Wireless CarPlay from the AirMirroring home screen. On first setup, enter and save the Wi-Fi name and password for the network the iPhone uses.

Check spelling and capitalization against the actual network. If the network details later change, update what you saved in the app. Do not paste passwords into a support conversation or include them in a setup screenshot.

2. Pair from the iPhone

Read the computer's Bluetooth name shown in AirMirroring's dialog. On the phone, go to Settings > Bluetooth and select that name. Complete pairing and allow CarPlay when prompted.

Choose the name shown by the app rather than a similarly named computer in the room. If Windows does not recognize a Bluetooth adapter, resolve that hardware or driver issue before retrying phone discovery.

Apple's CarPlay troubleshooting guidance also identifies Siri and CarPlay restrictions as iPhone checks. Enabling Siri for setup does not establish that this Windows receiver can use the PC microphone for conversations.

3. Return to the App and Enter CarPlay

Select the intended iPhone in AirMirroring and click Enter CarPlay. This manual step matters: a successful Bluetooth pairing does not enter the CarPlay interface automatically.

After ending a session, or after a failed attempt, return to the app and click Enter CarPlay again for the selected phone. Do not wait indefinitely for the Bluetooth status alone to start the dashboard.

Success means the CarPlay interface appears and the required supported function works. If the ordinary iPhone home screen appears instead, you have started full-screen mirroring, which is a different feature.

Do Both Devices Need the Same Wi-Fi?

They need the same LAN for this flow. The iPhone uses Wi-Fi; the PC may use Wi-Fi or Ethernet to that local network. Both having internet access does not prove they can communicate locally.

Guest networks can restrict communication between devices. If you are using managed or guest Wi-Fi, verify its local-device policy rather than changing passwords or adapter settings at random. Ask the administrator if the network belongs to your workplace or another organization.

Two radio bands on one correctly configured home LAN may communicate normally. A 2.4 GHz versus 5 GHz difference alone is not proof of isolation or the reason CarPlay failed.

If Pairing Succeeds but the Dashboard Does Not Appear

Check in this order:

  1. Confirm you allowed CarPlay on the phone.
  2. Recheck the saved Wi-Fi details and that the PC and phone share the LAN.
  3. Select the correct iPhone in AirMirroring and click Enter CarPlay.
  4. If it still waits, try turning iPhone Wi-Fi off and on, rejoining the original network, and entering CarPlay again.

The final step has a single successful report, not evidence of a universal repair. If it fails, record the state instead of repeatedly cycling every connection.

Use CarPlay not connecting to Windows for further stage-based checks. For a wired alternative, see the complete Windows setup guide.

Wireless CarPlay on Windows FAQ

Does wireless CarPlay use Bluetooth or Wi-Fi?

This setup requires Bluetooth enabled on both devices and an iPhone Wi-Fi connection on the shared LAN. A pairing record alone does not verify that the CarPlay session started; use Enter CarPlay in the app.

Does my PC need Wi-Fi for wireless CarPlay?

Not necessarily: this flow permits a PC using Ethernet on the same LAN. The PC still needs a Bluetooth adapter recognized by Windows.

Can I use CarPlay without plugging in my iPhone?

Yes, when the receiver and your device combination support the wireless flow above. USB setup is a separate option and can help compare a wireless-specific failure on the same devices.
