Screen Mirroring Has No Sound on TV

Updated October 13, 20265 min read

TL;DR: For an iPhone or iPad mirrored through AirPlay or AirMirror with picture but no TV sound, play a local video, raise its media volume, unmute the TV, and select the intended TV speakers. Disconnect unintended Bluetooth audio, then restart mirroring. If only one app is silent, use its supported TV playback method.

Use a video saved in Photos as the baseline; a muted social clip or protected title is not a reliable test.

Get Sound on the TV in the Right Order

1. Check the TV Audio Path

Play a TV-native app first. If it is silent, repair the TV or sound-system path before troubleshooting mirroring.

Use the remote to unmute and raise the volume. Select the TV speakers or intended sound system, and confirm external equipment is on the correct input.

Menu names vary by TV model and firmware. Avoid advanced format changes until basic speaker output works.

2. Check iPhone Media Volume and Routing

While the local video plays, press Volume Up. In Control Center, the Screen Mirroring tile identifies the full-screen receiver; the AirPlay/audio control in the media card shows the media destination. Change it only if it lists AirPods, a Bluetooth speaker, or another unintended device.

Disconnect unintended Bluetooth audio. Silent Mode mainly affects calls, alerts, and system sounds; the decisive test is whether a known local video plays through the selected TV path.

3. Reconnect the Mirroring Session

Open Control Center > Screen Mirroring > Stop Mirroring. On Android TV, close and reopen AirMirror Receiver and leave its receiver screen active. Start a new session by selecting the TV name displayed by AirMirror.

For built-in AirPlay, restart the receiver using the TV's documented setting. See how to mirror iPhone to Android TV for setup.

4. Separate an App Problem From a System Problem

Test three sources in order:

  1. A local video in Photos with known audio.
  2. A second unprotected app or media source.
  3. The app that was silent.

If only the third test fails, update that app and use its AirPlay option or TV app. Use Cast only if the TV has a compatible Google Cast receiver and the iPhone app provides a Cast button.

AirMirror's Google Play listing says DRM-protected Netflix, paid iTunes videos, and paid Google Movies are unsupported. AirMirror cannot bypass a service's protection or guarantee audio from an app that restricts external playback.

5. Stabilize and Update the Connection

If sound disappears with freezes or disconnects, confirm both devices share the same home LAN, avoid guest Wi-Fi and VPNs, reduce network load, and move closer to the router.

Restart the iPhone and TV or receiver, then update iOS, the TV system or firmware, and AirMirror. Apple's AirPlay troubleshooting guidance recommends checking that devices are on, nearby, updated, on the same Wi-Fi, and restarted; it also tells users to verify volume and mute when video works without audio.

What Not to Change First

Do not factory-reset the TV or reset iPhone network settings before testing a local video. Google Cast and full-screen AirPlay mirroring are different: Cast hands supported media to a compatible receiver, while mirroring sends the live display. See AirPlay vs casting vs screen mirroring.

If all local sources remain silent, record device and software versions, the connection method, and three-source test results before contacting support.

Screen Mirroring Has No Sound on TV FAQ

Why won't my TV play sound when I screen mirror?

First play a TV-native app or known input. If it has sound, mirror a local Photos video, raise iPhone media volume, and check the media card in Control Center; change its destination only if it shows AirPods, Bluetooth, or another unintended device, then reconnect.

How to fix screen mirroring no sound?

Unmute the TV, select its intended speakers, raise iPhone media volume during a local video, disconnect an unintended Bluetooth output, and restart mirroring. If only one app is silent, use its TV app or supported AirPlay path; use Cast only with a compatible Google Cast receiver.

How to get audio on screen mirroring iPhone?

Open AirMirror on Android TV, put it and the iPhone on the same local network, then select its displayed name under Control Center > Screen Mirroring. Play a local Photos video and follow the TV-output and media-routing checks above if its picture appears without sound.

How to keep sound on iPhone when screen mirroring?

Full-screen AirPlay mirroring normally sends playback to the selected receiver. Reliable simultaneous audio from both the iPhone and TV is generally not available across apps and receivers; selecting the iPhone as the media destination may remove sound from the TV.
